This video tells the story of the portland building by michael graves, a building with a tumultuous history that was ultimately saved from the wrecking ball when the city raised nearly $200. We empower people to discover and preserve portland’s historic and culturally significant places. We envision that, through our programs and advocacy, people across portland will embrace preservation and reuse as a key component of creating equitable, livable, and sustainable communities. We work to keep historic buildings and spaces intact, so these places and their stories are woven into the fabric of our evolving city. The architectural heritage center’s mission is to “inspire people to conserve the art, craft, and context of historic buildings and places to promote our cultural heritage as a vital element of livable, sustainable, communities. ” Portland was a prosperous and expanding city in the late 19th century. Many fine quality homes were built in this period. Unfortunately, many of them were demolished to make way for the expansion of the prosperous downtown. This article will take you on a journey through portland’s past, exploring its hidden histories, architectural gems, and the stories of the people who shaped this unique city. Discover the historic old port with its cobblestone streets and waterfront views. We empower people to discover and preserve portland’s historic and culturally significant places. Knowing what defines the popular architectural styles that are a part of portland’s history is important. Portland’s neighborhoods are full of historic homes. Preserving the stories that these architectural treasures tell is what we love to do at arciform. Yet, in hindsight, the new parks—hippies included—energized the body politic to reshape downtown portland. A funny thing happened to the federally funded effort to “perk up portland”: A landscape architect named lawrence halprin and his wife, dancer anna halprin, slipped something into the water.
